Memoirs of a Geisha

Unable to finish the book yet, I turn to the movie which I missed when it was released. It is about the Memoirs of a Geisha as narrated by Chiyo/Sayuri (played by Ziyi Zhang). The story took place in Japan during the time of the Hitler and the world war. It is about how Sayuri learnt to become a Geisha under the guidance of Mameha (played by Michelle Yeoh); reminds one of how Radha teaches Kamasutra to the young princess in the movie Kamasutra.

Geisha are a thing of beauty and not those who just sells their bodies as in prostitution and they are neither wives. It is said, “you cannot called yourself a true Geisha untill you can stop a man in his tracks with a single look.” In the movie, Memeha taught Chiyo about how a Maiko becomes a Geisha after the Mizuage which is like breaking the virginity - the desire of the man’s eel to move inside a woman’s cave. Chiyo was names to Sayuri once she becomes a Maiko, an apprentice Geisha. She was formally called Nitta Sayuri when she was bidded for 15,000 yen by Dr. Crab. I like the many dialogues and the importance of the dress Kimono in the movie. It is not upto to a Geish to want or to feel. Geisha is an artist of the floating world, she dances, sings and does whatever you want, the rest is shadows, the rest is secret.

After all, these are not the memoirs of an empress nor of a princess; these are meoirs of one of a kind.
