What happens when you exceed the 2GB Gmail storage limit

About a month ago, I realized that I am running out of my Gmail storage limit. Coupla days back, I saw that I have used 99% of the 2GB limit and today I hit the 100% cap. Today, I’m writing this article so others will know what happens when they hit the storage limit on Gmail and to serve the interest of few people who have asked me to let them know what really happens.

The first impact I had when I hit the 100% (used 2,790 MB of my 2,791 MB limit), I can no longer COMPOSE mails. Strangely, some people on the mailing list have reported seeing my post (the one that I cannot send/compose). One of my friend tried to send me a 2 MB mail and it bounced. However, I’ve been receiving text mails from mailing list and I see that my limit is increased by 1 MB even though it is reported as being fully used - 2,792 MB out of the 2,792 MB limit. At this stage, I can no longer save mails. I think I’ve totally exhausted my limit.

I will be deleting the spams and some old mails to regain some space. In the meantime, I would like to request Google to give me more Gmail Storage Space. Google promised Gmail users that — No one will ever need to delete mails!. So, let me not delete my mails, Please give me more Space.

I’d download some of the mail using outlook or thunderbird and compress them. But real neat post. Answered a lot of questions.

And oh, you can just wait for like a few minutes and there’ll be some more space.

PS. That’s some disturbing privacy invasion with the mail screenshots.

You do realize that you can move emails to an archive, and then browse for them later. There is an alternative to deleting them.

Don’t be greedy :) Saying you’ll never have to delete any email was obviously a hyperbole to emphasize the huge space you were GIVEN. You got alot for nothing, say thanks, show some appreciation, and delete some mail.

Hey Guys, excuse me but none of my mails have big videos or MP3s. They are mostly mailing list subscription and some initial client project requirement attachments (beyond that, I take them on my personal or official account).

I don’t know dude… I work for IT at a firm in NY and I absolutely hate when people don’t purge unneeded emails… 2+ GB limit is more than sufficient and is great for a free service… here’s an idea… use outlook as your client to access gmail so you can archive the emails to your machine instead of fussing about you email restrictions

just download a free mail client like thunderbird or something and pull your email from the service via pop. Burn it to a dvd and you are set to delete everything in your account and still have the rest on dvd as a backup.

I agree with the people saying to just download the old e-mails to a local client.

Also, gmail is a FREE service, so google doesn’t have to give you any more space.

I totally understand getting a new e-mail address is very much a pain. Especially having to notify everyone that e-mails you. But you could also make a mailing list only account. Call it braje.lists@gmail or whatever….

Furthermore, I notice that you have a VERY large amount of unread e-mails under certain labels (ex. FlexCoders, FICoders, videoblogging, CSSHTML) If you don’t read them why have them?

And finally, for those people being ass holes, all he wrote was “Please give me more space” There was no demanding space at all. I believe he knows that they don’t HAVE to give him space. But just asking to live up to their “tagline”.

[...] On digg, again, there was this dude who’s Gmail ran out of space. Go figure, he couldn’t compose or recieve emails. But it’s weird to hear that the 2.7GB you get with the Gmail is filled up. Mine is at around 6%, and that includes a bit of music on there, too, but mostly emails. When mine becomes full, I’ll probably just make a new account just for storage. Changing emails is a PAIN. Yaus [...]
