Like me, I am sure more than 99% of the Indian TV viewers were confused by the Nike commercial aired on TV networks coupla weeks back. Like most Cricket based commercials in India, this Nike one was a twist and a knock out right way. The video took place at a typical High Traffic Mumbai Road.
When everything else was at standstill, some people started to play cricket. Neighbors and by-standers joins in, including the cheering crowds from Balcony onlookers, Cab Drivers. To compliment to the awesome video, it has a tappy and passionate musical beat. It is perhaps one of the best commercial running on Indian TV these days.
About the odd but ticklishly cool music, composer Ram Sampath says, “The ad depicts aggressive energy needed to play the game in the spirit of the game. The reason it worked is because it has certain energy. There was a guitar, trumpet and Ella Castellino, the singer. I had to capture the energy of the video.”
The song is Konkani, a reinvention of old Goan music.
The Konkani version of the song
Rav patrao rav
Khedong maka di mhunta aao
Khedong maka di na zhalya
Tuzho kortelem patlanv
Khedoch amche oslen
Kednanch ravonk nosle
Undir matracho khed yo kosle
Maka bhogta oslen
Arre maaroon, dhoroon, phodoon
Saiba noshib mozhe phoslen
English Translation
Wait, partner, wait
First let me play
If you don’t play, I’ll keep chasing you all day
Our game is like this only
Where we have no time to think
It is the game of cat and mouse
That I have begun to love
And in the falling running breaking
My destiny is entwined
