Black Friday

The movie Black Friday is based on the book “Black Friday” written by Hussain Zaidi. The book is a pithy report of the plot and police inquiry of the serial bomb blasts that shook Mumbai on the 12th March 1993. Kashyap (The director) has remained honest to the book. His movie is almost a visual extension of the Zaidi’s work. The movie employs a chapterwise, loaded narrative. The movie resembles a documentary in terms of its taking.

The story has now been proven as true in the court of law. So I guess its not challengable anymore. The key characters were Tiger Memon (Malhotra) is the mastermind behind the blasts. He picks up some boys from mumbai who were instigated in the name of Jehad. They are trained in some place by Pakistani army men and then brought back to Mumbai to execute the bomb blasts. Rakesh Maria (Kay Kay Menon) was the officer incharge. Asusual a brilliant performance. And Badshah khan (Shrivastav, brilliantly shaky) was the aide who gave in ultimately and helped police solve the case.

Nobody is the natural protagonist in the movie; in the sense that the movie doesnt unfold through the eyes of any one character. The movie unfolds largely through the eyes of the viewer. The movie appeals to a more intellectual level than an emotional level. The director has taken pains to put forth an unbiased view of the situation. This is one movie that has dared to name people and places. One must applaud the film maker for the same.

However, I think the message underlying the movie will be forgotten soon. “An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind”, this just doesnt seem to be understood by us Indians even today. The movie tends to be a bit lengthy. But i must say “Paisa Vasool”!
