Book: Casino Royale

Casino RoyaleI read Ian Fleming’s first James Bond fiction Novel - Casino Royale when I was still in 7th or 8th grade. It was because I saw Dr. No and wanted to read James Bond novels. I can hardly recollect the story and I felt it needs a reading again.

Casino Royale involves James Bond in espionage at a glamourous Continental casino. The book itself isn’t the same as the fast paced Casino Royale Movie.

Casino Royale is the one that introduced James Bond to us. The story is net in the 1930’s, with an aroma of the postwar Cold War scenes. The book gives us the vivid likes of James Bond - Casinos and Women (not in any particular order). In our story, James Bond felt for the incredibly sensuous Vesper Lynd. They teamed up to foil the game plan of Le Chiffre, the Russain agent who is having a hard time with his invesment losing front and back.

Casino Royale has action, suspense, romance - Bond falls in love with Vesper. Otherwise, Bond comes off as a comparatively genuine and human. For example, unlike in the movies, his peccadilloes are not the result of supercilious snobbery. He is condescending as he gives detailed instructions to a waiter for the preparation of a meal, but subsequently explains to his dinner companion that he does that because he usually eats alone when he is working and it makes the meal more interesting.  Bond is cold and carries many distasteful personality traits, but he is not unsympathetic.

Btw, M is not a female in the book!
