Curse of the Golden Flower

Curse of the Golden FlowerAnother extremely elaborate, extensively colorful movie from the Director of Hero - Yimou Zhang, Curse of the Golden Flower is a movie about relationships, disloyalty and lots of killing - in fact, almost everybody got killed. Released very late in India, the movie did not even have an English Audio but Mandarin with English Sub-Title.

The movie flaunts the quantity of the population of China, there were so many people; you’ll see that there can be one person just to place one flower pot on the royal ground. We have the charismatic Chow Yun-Fat playing the role of the Emperor Ping, an aging warrior. He is an emperor with a steel heart - making political conspiracies to prove his power over his people including his second wife.

Empress Phoenix (Li Gong) despite knowing the fact that she is being poisoned slowly by her husband, succumbs to the royal rituals. The movies fabricates extremely elaborate steps with the royal routine, the announcement of the hourly clock, the medicine routine of the Empress - all were so loudly and colorfully extended.

There were, as usual, some physics defying stunts - black dressed soldiers surfing high on cables supported by bamboo-slits, swords and spear fights of murderous intents. The final fight between the Empress’s soldiers and the Emperor’s royal guard happens on the night of a grand royal ceremony. As usual, the cable works were awesome. Even Hollywood find it hard to come to the equals of the like of John Woo and Yimou Zhang when it comes to cable works.
