Dreamgirls opened last week in India; I had the time out today to see it in its full musical glory. It was all music from beginning to the end; music all through for more than 2 hours. Personally, it was dragging at many scenes specially during the initial beginning. Jammie Foxx reminded me of Ray and his brilliant acting.
Set during the 60s, the story is about three aspiring women with a dream - the Dreamers. They started off participating in competitions and one day landed up as back-up singers for James “Thunder” Early (Eddie Murphy) courtesy Curtis Taylor (Jamie Foxx). Curtis was able to bring the Dreamers into the limelight through his business tactics. However, his decision to let Deena Jones (Beyoncé Knowles) the prettier of the lot be the front singer and not Effie White (Jennifer Hudson) turn a twist in the relationship amongst the Dreamers and Curtis. Effie became pregnant who later had a girl child. Curtis eventually marries Deena but his manipulative business minded behavior proves distasteful to their relationship which eventually lead to their separation. Finally, The Dreamers re-united and sang their last song.
Things I don’t like are the song-phrase in between dialogue. We’re are fine with the good music but singing all along replacing that for talks was a bit of a drag. On the overall, the marvelous musical keep the theater loud and musical till the end.
