In a rather smart agreement by India, the United States finally agreed to import our Alphanso and Kesar mangoes in lieu of their Harley Davidson bikes for India. To mark the agreement, the first shipment of 150 boxes of mangoes acquired clearance from the Indian customs yesterday and will be on its export-bound to the Big Apple. This is the first of such mango shipment in 18 years.
Earlier, the export of mangoes had been restricted by the US because India had not complied with their demand for irradiation treatment for plants. The fact is that, “India is one of the largest producer of mangoes producing almost 14 million tonnes and exporting around 70 thousand tonnes all over the world.” With the current export agreement with the US, India would be able to export about 10,000 tonnes of mangoes to the US.
The Alphansoes will be priced roughly about $36 per dozen in the American markets. However, the first batch of imports have been exempted from import duty. The mangoes have undergone a strict irradiation treatment to match the phytosanitary requirements of the US quarantine authority. More than 20 private agencies have come forward to set up radiation plants. Some of the exporters who are exporting mangoes by the first shipment include KayBee Exports, Desai Exports and N.M. Exports.
