Guru - Villager, Visionary, Winner

GuruI was expecting a Biopic of Dhirabhai Ambani, but Mani Ratnam wriggled a bit, changing few facts and makes it into a utterly amazing movie. Guru is a movie based on the life of a Business Genius, Dhirabhai Ambani which was premiered in Toronto on 12th January, 2007. Media reports that Abhishek Bachan proposed to Aishwarya Rai after the screening of Guru, she agreed. They are engaged now and are supposedly dated to be married in February, 2007. The marriage is coined as one of the most high profile celebrity marriage in India.

Guru as a movie portrays the love story of Gurukant Desai (Abhishek Bachchan) with his work and his family. Mani Ratnam is an awesome director. He not only concentrates on the main character but give their share to the other characters without loosing any of the charm. Aishwarya Rai which seem to have been darkly shadowed in Dhoom 2, is mascara-ed in the storyline and Mani Ratnam did one hell of an awesome job in bringing the best out of Aishwarya. She plays the wife of Gurukant Desai - Sujata. I was extremely surprised when Mithun Chakraborty is not a turn off in Guru. Come on, you know well what you’d think when you hear of Mithun now-a-days. But Mani Ratnam handled Manik Dasgupta (Mithun Chakraborty) so well as a publisher of the Newspaper - The Independent. Shyam Saxena (R. Madhavan) was given due weightage where he tries to and succeeds in exposing many irregularities in the business matters of Guru Bhai. The story of Vidya Balan as the handicap Meenakshi aka Meenu, suffering from multiple sclerosis was well spun into the fabric of the movie.

The Movie starts with the early life of Gurukant Desai in a small village in Gujarat, India. Guru Bhai lives with his family, son to a School Headmaster, he is not interested in higher studies. He is instead fascinated to earn money, big money. He moved to Turkey to pursue his Business dreams. After spending 7 hard working years, he decided to return home and start his own business. Do not miss the Item Number by the voluptuous Jumpa (Mallika Sherawat). Well, that is what she is good for, right? The Music by A.R. Rehman is good as usual; Lyric is from Gulzaar.

Guru had Rs. 15,000 at the time when he decided to start his business and needed another Rs. 15,000 to get his Business started. The money came in the form of Dowry by marrying his friend’s sister Sujatha (Aishwarya Rai). Sujata was a restless girl, jilted in love and currently without a suitor. After marrying Sujatha, Guru moves to Mumbai along with his brother-in-law. He eventually becomes the Polyester Tycoon after sidelining all his business rivals with his manipulative financial juggling tactics.

This is definitely a good movie and you’ll even get to see some scenic shots of the early 1940s to 1080s view of Gujarat and Mumbai.
