“Penguins, A love Story” is being released in India today in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telegu. I saw the trailers on TV Commercials and it struck me that I seem to have seen this movie. Pondering on it, I realize this is indeed March of the Penguins, an animal documentary narrated by Amitabh Bachchan for the worldwide release, alternatively by Morgan Freeman for the US Release. I enjoyed watching it on DVD (perhaps the uncut version) during late 2005. Personally, I feel that this that kind of movie which you don’t watch in the theatre but enjoy on a DVD unless you really plan to take the pleasure of watching the scenic Antarctica Snow and the High-Definition photography of the Movie.
The documentary is about Antarctica and the beautiful penguins. Every year, Penguins goes to a breeding ground which is about a week’s march from the nearest inlet. While they march, the Penguins looks like a lost tribe in tuxedos. They are compared to the humans not only for their comical diligence of their walk but for what happens after they reach their destination. In the same spot at which they were all born, they seek out individual partners to produce and nurture an offspring.
The newly formed couples intertwine beautifully and almost as soon as the female lays an egg, she gently rolls it to the male for safekeeping/hatching. The male penguins will keep it warm beneath a tuft of feathers for 2 months while the female marches back to the ocean for food. Remember the initial scenes of Happy Feet which depicts this phenomena.
While the egg hatches, the fathers feed the little penguins. Together the Penguins will face the winter storms before marching back to the breeding grounds, locates their female counterparts and the family re-unites. This artful love story of the Penguins can be so easily devastated by the deadly cold, by predators or even by grieving mothers who try to poach other’s chicks; in that the movie made us quite emotional.
Enjoy this 2006 Oscar winning Documentary film. It is running in most movie hall and multiplexes all over India from today.
