The Cyber Crime Cell of Mumbai feels that Orkut is a threat to the Nation’s security and thus be blocked! They claimed that they have received series of complaints in the recent past and eventually have urged Google to block Orkut in India. What a predicament? Then, very soon, they will be blocking Facebook, MySpace and all the other Social Networking sites. They are targeting just Orkut for now as it is one of the most popular and used site in India.
This followed after the recent defamatory and derogatory profiles of Chhatrapati Shivaji and Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackery created by mischief-mongers on Orkut. Well, what I say is be competent enough to catch those and not block Orkut. Orkut is a Social Networking site and blocking that will never solve the problem of such mischief mongers. However, that will make the site unavailable to other millions of Indian Internet users. So, are you suggesting to block a millions to weed out a miniscule of stray users? In fact, this reminds of the Superstitious Digerati.
Despite various futile efforts by the authorities, including blocking of the particular profile, the mischief-mongers are still at large. As their efforts failed, the authority have sent a letter to Google, through the Computer Response Emergency Team (the Delhi-based nodal agency set up to monitor Internet-related issues in the country), to permanently block the links of Orkut to India.
I am strongly against anybody defacing, or have ill wills against anything or anybody and who uses the social medium of Internet to spread bad name. However, I’m also not in favor of totally doing a black-out of the medium that others gain knowledge, information out of it. Orkut is being used by many youngsters and internet surfers in India to meet up with friends, make new friends and they even stumble upon lost friends, relatives. So, why block the many good things for just a minor small bad patch.
Btw, the site of Mumbai Cyber Crime Cell has a scrolling title. Come on, whoever did that still lives in the 20th century. Please tell them if you know the development team to stop being script kiddies. Scrolling titles, blinking Gif Animation, Flash intros in Websites are passe.
