Basically a Podcast is a digital media file that is distributed online using RSS feeds for playback on media players and personal computers. Download or streaming is the ways to get and reproduce the media files. The big difference between a podcast and other digital media format is the ability to be syndicate, subscribe and download the media automatically.
Furthermore, a podcast use a RSS content reader and can receive information (feed) from other blogs or websites. Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is not the only feed technology or format used for a podcast. Atom is another known syndication format. A podcaster is the author of any podcast. The term podcaster comes from the combination of “POD”, acronym which stands for “Portable On
Demand” and “CAST” come from the term “Broadcasting”.
The way a podcast work is using automatically XML files containing a list of addresses of the media files such as videos or clips, and audio files; in some cases, pictures. You can record a clip or mp3 file and put it available on a public server or thru an URI (Uniform Resource Identifier) which is a string of characters used to identify a resource. It make your files accessible and refers it to any section of a podcast.
I personally think that you may have a podcast for everything you want. There’s no limitation with it. Today, podcasts are used for music, entertainment, publicity and marketing, education, news, sports, religious sermons, politic, personal interest, health, public services and much more. Imagine having your iPod as a device subscribed to a wide variety of sections which are updated and synchronized every time you connect it to your personal computer. It’s really useful and fantastic.
You may become a podcaster, not only a simple podcaster but a professional one. For this, there are many types of software such as Podcast Station whereby you can record, edits, mix and publish your own podcasts. If you want to taste the way other Podcaster work and have a wide idea of others podcasts around the world, there’s a great tool (PodSpider Premium Edition) whereby you will have the ability to have a database or directory of all the most important podcasts available online and organize them by topics such as type if is audio or video, by language, subjects and others.
On May 2006, the 1st edition of a book written Bob Walch and Mur Lafferty was released - Tricks of the Podcasting Masters - which has the basics of podcasting and the way you can improve it and make it better to the level of a professional podcast. I highly recomment this book for any avid podcaster or who wish to become one.
Currently, there are more than 90,000 podcasts available online and this new media fever is being used to generate millions of dollars
in publicity and advertisements. Despite the small quantity of users it represents an attractive medium to make business. In 2011, podcasting will generate in US close to $400 millions of dollars in Ads, according to a report released by eMarketers at the beginning of 2007.
