Warning: This article is a bit Not-Safe-For-Work!
The sordid relationship between the internet and pornography is a storied one. It’s a kinship that inpires thoughts of locked doors and closed blinds, the secret fulfillment of shameful lusts. That, and it makes a hell of a lot of money. - Good Magazine
This weekend Techcrunch, a site that reports mostly about Startups with main emphasis to the ones in Silicon Valley, startled its reader with some raunchy statistics of the Internet Pornography Industry.
The video from Good Magazine shows a number of stats about the Internet pornography industry, in an “almost” not safe for work format. It is staggering how much actual money flows through porn and how many people are involved in the industry:
- 89% of porn is created in the U.S.
- $2.84 billion in revenue was generated from U.S. porn sites in 2006
- $89/second is spent on porn
- 72% of porn viewers are men
- 260 new porn sites go online daily
It may be noted that there have been many bold porn statups - porn-specific browser HeatSeek, a user generated porn YouTube clone called PornTube, EroShare and ScrewTube.
TechCrunch adds that the porn industry innovates first and key features make their way to more mainstream sites. But over the last couple of years, many of the new ideas around web applications, like user generated content, video sharing, etc., went mainstream first and are now hitting the porn sites.

Btw, pornography is illegal in India. And yes, it took me over an hour thinking about the title and options for the “Opinion Poll”. I usually create a poll while writing an article or within minutes of posting an article but I had to be careful with this one!
And No, I’m not related to any porn business - online or otherwise!

Wow–I had no idea that porn was illegal in India, interesting (unfortunate, but interesting)!
