A romantic Yash Raj Film’s production released today, Ta Ra Rum Pum, tells the story of Raj Veer (RV) Singh (Saif Khan) who is sort of a NASCAR racer. The movie is a bit like an Indian-ised romantic spell winged-on of the Days of Thunder (with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in the lead) though I heard Saif claiming against it on the 93.5 FM.
One noticeable difference with this big banner movie was that, the entirety of the story took place in the United States (I know this is not new for Bollywood). It looks like they realized that the Indian terrain, even some of the best places in Mumbai, are best left to the K*-alized serials from Ekta Kapoor. Even they are spending crores to do their shots these days.
The movie details about how Raj Veer, from a Tyre Change becomes a Racer, how he met Radhika (Rani Mukherji), eventually marrying her, got two kids - Princess (Angelina Idnani) and Champ (Ali Haji), how he faced the cruelties of life, overcomes it and learns his lessons.
Alright, here is a little longer story without uprooting a spoiler. Raj Veer is a pit-crew worker in a racing team with a passion for fast racing. He is somehow discovered by a team manager, Harry (Jaaved Jaaferi). On that same day, he met a music student, Radhika, who he falls for instantly. Harry was impressed by his fast Taxi driving and thus gets him into Speeding Saddles, a failing race team - Raj Veer becomes “RV” - the Race Driver. His racing career took off amazingly, his love life also progressed so romantically. He becomes a happy man, a caring husband and a good father to his two kids.
He becomes the No. 1 Fast Car racer and had completed over 50 races on the top. However, on a fateful race, he was squashed by Rusty (Ken Thompson - a new entrant into movies) and he got badly hurt in the accident to the tune that he remains fearful afterwards never to won a race again. His life turns into a nightmare, he is fired, lost his cars, home and moves into a dingy sub-urban locality. The family then survives on a lifestyle they were not used to before.
It is then hardship and of course, you know the morality tale in Hindi Bollywood movies. However, I will leave the later part of the story for you. In Ta Ra Rum Pum, Saif looks more of the family hero and very less of a fast car racer nor like a racing champion. The race sequences don’t look that exciting and were always predictable. On the overall, the movie is good but I don’t this will re-do the “Hum Tum” magic. The movie is not really for the typical Indian crowd and is the story of the downtown and metropolitan city people.
In the movie, it is surprising that the two kids who grew up among the New Yorker speaks Hindi so well at that age! Rani Mukherji’s attire and getup don’t really compliment her. In one of the song sequence, her super short skirt was showing off her white panty (you’ve to watch very minutely for this one) and bulky himalayan boots seem to drag her down. The music is good but I don’t know why these music seem bland to me these days.

Ok accepted that the movie is not that great. But it does show a positive side of life. As happiness and sadness are part of life, still you should always have a fighting spirit. The music is good, but I love the lyric more.
