The power of the community, the idea of crowsourcing have seem to reached its peak - even the 7 wonders of the world was decided by the crowd. Millions of people around the world voted for the New 7 Wonders of the world through the internet voting poll and SMS. The result was announced on 07-07-07. The finalist 21 out of the 77 submissions were listed and voted by the people around the world.
The New 7 Wonders of the World are
- Great Wall of China (China)
- Taj Mahal (India)
- The Pink Ruins of Petra (Jordan)
- The Colosseum of Rome (Italy)
- Christ Redeemer (Brazil)
- Machu Picchu (Peru)
- Chichén Itzá, Mayan City of (Mexixo)
A private Swiss foundation launched the contest in January, allowing voters to choose from 21 sites short-listed out of 77. Well, it was an easy maths for India’s SMS number calculation with its millions of finger-happy phone subscribers voting through the SMS option. There are more than 165 million mobile phone subscribers in India and many out of that much have voted for Taj Mahal of India.

It’s the first I’ve heard of the vote, but I must say that the vote would have been biased where the people who knew about the vote would only know, people would vote for their own country, and the Internet/SMS aren’t available everywhere.
