Multiplexes across Mumbai, India released The Simpsons Movie today without much fanfare and publicity; and the America-centric movie were able to make us Indian laugh-out-loud all along the 90 minute movie.
Well, in a time when Computer animation brings up worlds of unsurpassed beauty, one movie dares to be ugly - - in 2D.
The movie has a pre-credit sequence featuring Itchy and Scratchy, the blue mouse and black cat, a parody of violent cartoons such as Tom and Jerry and the Roadrunner films where animal characters get flattened and blown up. They are regularly watched on TV by the Simpson family but here they are seen in a cinema by Bart, Lisa and their parents, Marge and Homer. Homer Simpson turns around to the audience (well us) and asked the obvious, “Why pay for something you can see on TV for free?”
The Simpsons Movie is about how Homer accidentally (of course) caused an environmental crisis by dumping a silo full of his newly acquired pet pig’s waste into a lake in Springfield. Then the EPA ordered an airtight dome placed over the entire city. The city suffers, the Simpsons family escapes to Alaska, finally returns to save Springfield.
There were many truly amazing satire - like that of the congregation rushes from the church into the bar next door in search of a stiff drink. They pass the habitues of next Bar, fleeing in the opposite direction to make their peace with God in church.
This is one must-watch movie of this season.
