Transformers

TrasformersSo, they were waiting for our Independence Day! Transformers was released in the US on its Independence Day (4th of July) while it was released here in India on our Independence Day (15th August).

Two robotic clans - Autobots and Decepticons - from the planet Cybertron, are in war over a powerful cube thingy called the Allspark that fell on Earth; thus leaving the fate of the manking in between. Well, that’s the story and nothing beyond that. However, Transformers is not for the story, it is more like a Bollywood Govinda movie - you’ve to just enjoy it while it last without any reasoning and without trying to grow brains over the story. The movie was fast and furious and it continues that tempo till the movie’s destructive climax.

Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf), unwittingly buys a battered 1976 Chevy Camaro which turns out to be a robot in disguise - “Bumblebee”, a loyal robot soldier of the team led by Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen). We have Mikaela Banes (Megan Fox) as Sam’s girlfriend who is good with cars and their parts. Other casts includes Josh Duhamel as Captain Lennox and Tyrese Gibson as USAF Tech Sergeant Epps are soldiers who survive a Decepticon attack in Qatar. Jon Voight is the Defense Secretary John Keller. Glen Whitmann (Anthony Anderson) is the very un-typical computer hacker while Maggie Madsen (Rachael Taylor) is the hot Australian computer geek.

Sam helps the Autobots with the help of his grand father’s bifocals which got engraved with some cryptic code to locate the AllSpark Cube. His grand father had accidentally discovered and activated the Megatron (voice by Hugo Weaving). Sam tried to sell the bifocal on ebay and that is how the robots traced it back to him.

Be prepared to expect more of a fun and playful satire than a serious NBA (Non-Biological Aliens) fights. The humor side of the movie was funny enough; watch out for the Indian Call Center guy who responded to a phone call from Qatar during the battle scene and his offer for life-time free credit card. Also, watch Sam’s ID on ebay and the satire in it where Americans try to sell everything to anything on ebay and accept payments through Paypal.

By the way, the CGI was superb and jaw-droppingly fantastic. The transformation of the Transformers were mechanically seamless and greasily free-flowing.
