What’s the Hurry?

Busy TrafficWe are all whizzing through life, with our foot firmly pressed on the accelerator. Zooming from one milestone to another, life for most of us just resembles distant scenery that we occasionally glimpse in the rear-view mirror. With our eyes clearly trained towards the road ahead, we hurry on. And on. And on. And on. Without the faintest clue as to where we are going, as we are in such a hurry that we don’t even read the signboards that probably read : stop and smell the roses.

In our rush to nowhere our lives have begun to resemble a ‘to-do list’. In our endeavor to achieve the better, best, our lives have become a materialistic heaven. But where are we headed? Is anyone thinking? We are headed to a highly stressful, sleep deprived, dissatisfied life. We may have a seven course dinner in a five star hotel, but where is the food for thought?

We have begun to resemble the sheep. Just following what everyone else is doing. Just because my neighbor has a three bedroom apartment, I must have a pent house. My colleague at work has a pent house, I must own a bungalow. Isn’t it foolish? Our needs are not all the same. We are different people and we must realize this.

Our lives are becoming increasingly materialistic. We tend to derive happiness from the objects we own. Rarely do we think about the people who care about us. All the most precious things are ones we can attach a value to. In fact, we have even stooped to the level of attaching pricetags to individuals-friends, relatives, and so on..

Just last week I met a boy who was very frustrated. I asked him if I could be of any help to him. He immediately confided in me. He told me that he was working in a big MNC and was at a good post. However he was not feeling very happy. He was ashamed about the fact that he was thinking about everyone in terms of their utility-what can I gain from this person? I told him, that the fact that he had noticed this, was big enough. And that sometimes we come really far from where we actually want to be. We need to continuously assess our goals and move towards them. Its easy to lose direction. But we must try to stand our ground.

Please slow down a little; look around yourself. Life is beautiful. Please take a breath or you will exasperated. Notice the little things in life. How many of us notice the little yellow n purple wild flowers that grow in the rains? They are indeed beautiful but one will realize this only when one notices them. Many a times we do not pay heed to signs we see n feel. If we feel happy about smaller things, then we will be left with little to worry about. Our life will be happier. Think about it!!!
