The control room, which was inaugurated by The Minorities Welfare Minister, Mr. Ali Shabbir, has been built at a whopping cost of Rs3.8 million. The minorities welfare department is solely responsible for the development and maintenance of the room explaining that it was the need of the hour keeping in mind the threats from the terrorists last year, and the recent mishaps all over the country.The security control room comprises of nine closed circuit televisions along with fourteen still and rotating cameras for a strict security over and around the mosque area. With hundreds of deities visting the religious mosque every day, there was an urgent need of an effective system of keeping an eye over the huge crowd moving in and out throughout the day.

The equipments that have been installed also consist of six door frame metal detectors and the security troop has been handed over with six metal detectors for the scrutiny purpose.

Shabbir informed that around a million rupees would be spent on the salaries of these security personnel, and if required, they would shell out more as well.

Mr. Gaurav Barua, director, IIT – Guwahati has mentioned about a meeting of the heads of all these institutes to discuss the possible solution over the entangled issue where they plan to request the Human Resource and Development (HRD) Ministry to open the unfilled seats for the general category candidates and increase their cut offs.

The reservation criteria followed this year at all the IITs is as under:

• 15 % - Scheduled caste (SC)
• 7.5% - Scheduled Tribes (ST)
• 9% - Other Backward Classes (old IIT’s)
• 17% - Other Backward Classes (New IIT’s)

It is being said that military and paramilitary troops were deployed at all government buildings including those of Pakistan Television, Radio Pakistan and the Supreme Court. It is also learnt that the judges colony, where almost all Supreme Court judges reside, was surrounded by paramilitary troops.

Well, Pakistan is indeed a strange country!

Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, who condemned the moves, has been replaced and is being confined to the Supreme Court with 10 other judges. It comes as the court was due to rule on the legality of Gen Musharraf’s re-election victory in October. The court was to decide whether Gen Musharraf was eligible to run for election last month while remaining army chief. It is reported that fears have been growing in the government that the Supreme Court ruling could go against Gen Musharraf.

Pakistan has been engulfed in political upheaval in recent months, and the security forces have suffered a series of blows from pro-Taleban militants opposed to Gen Musharraf’s support for the US-led military actions.
