
Today, at the very early hour, the Indian Sensex crossed the 16,000 mark, a 9 year high since May 1998, to bring down the Rupee below 40 against the US Dollar. At 9:45am, the partially convertible rupee was at 39.99/40.00 per dollar after having strengthened to as much as 39.88 before giving up some of its gains.

India can do military Nuclear test only if Pakistan and China does
Recently, India and the United States have made a historic breakthrough in their relations, striking a deal on civilian nuclear co-operation. The agreement would allow nuclear fuel for India’s Tarapur reactor. The US helped build the reactor but later reneged on contractual obligations to supply fuel for it because India refused to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The deal recognises India’s unique position as a nuclear state with rights and benefits which is outside the club of the five permanent nuclear powers. The United States made a commitment to invite India to participate in international nuclear research, something that India has demanded for years.

Punjab, Haryana tensions over Sikh protests
Thousands of Sikhs, many armed, have been staging protests, against a Hindu sect. On Thursday, tension gripped several towns of Punjab and there were clashes in Patiala and New Delhi between Dera Sacha Sauda followers and Sikhs protesting an advertisement which showed the sect head in the attire of Guru Gobind Singh.
The central government has sent two battalions of the Rapid Action Force, a paramilitary force comprising commandoes, to Sirsa. The Punjab and Haryana governments have been asked by the federal government to ensure that law and order is maintained. Punjab’s Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal, has asked the federal government to despatch 50 companies of paramilitary forces to ensure peace.
